B1/B2 Travel Visa Basics

Tourist Visas are considered “Nonimmigrant Visas” and should not be used if you intend to stay in the United States permanently. The Visa Waiver Program allows business and leisure travelers from participating countries to come to the United States without a visa for up to 90 days.  Check if your country is on the list,   you may only need to register in the online ESTA portal prior to traveling.
  • B1 Visas are for short term Business travel like negotiating contracts, attending professional conferences, or consulting with business associates.
  • B2 Visas are for traveling to and within the United States for sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, amateur sports competitions (unpaid), short training or education courses that do not count toward a degree, or for medical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is not allowed on a Tourist Visa?

You are not allowed to work, compete in professional athletic events, or obtain any education that counts toward a course of study or degree on a Tourist Visa. Birth Tourism, traveling with the intent of giving birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for the child, is also strictly prohibited.

How long does it take to get a Tourist Visa?

The application is fast, and the necessary documents are usually on hand or easily obtained, like your passport and itinerary. The wait for an embassy interview is likely the most time-consuming part of the process and it varies dramatically based on the embassy you are applying from. Interviews for Students, and Sponsored Work Visas take priority over the scheduling of Tourist Visas.

I want to travel with my family, can we all apply together?

Each traveler must submit their own Visa Application, but we can help you create a family or group application that will reduce the duplicate data entry and allow your applications to be processed concurrently.

Can I fill out the Application in my native language?

No. The forms must be submitted in English. The Law Caddy team will make sure you understand the terms on the application form and assist you in providing answers in English.
